New policy related to maximum draft in the outer harbour of Delfzijl

As of 1st May 2016 a new policy will be into force in the outer harbour of Delfzijl for vessels with a maximum length overall of 150 meters.

Over the past few years a study has been performed on the subject of sailing above and in silty water in the Zeehavenkanaal of Delfzijl. This study has been performed by the Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium and Universiteit of Gent and Wiertsema and Partners, on behalf of Groningen Seaports with the assistance of the Regional Pilot Association RLCN. After extensive simulations and full scale field tests in the harbour, it has been established that under certain conditions, it is safe to navigate above and even in the floating silt layer with an under keel clearance (UKC) of less than 10% of the draft to this layer.
